A bettor profited close to $500,000 from wagers on the downfall of the Venezuelan leader immediately preceding it was officially announced, raising questions about the possibility of profiting from non-public details of the US operation.

Changing Odds in Wagers

Wagers on Polymarket, a blockchain-based service, that the Venezuelan president would be no longer in control by the close of the month surged in the time leading up to Donald Trump stated on Saturday that the president had been apprehended.

A particular user, which became a member last month and took four positions, all on the Venezuelan situation, profited a total of $436,000 from a modest bet of $32.5K.

It remains unclear. This unidentified trader had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Market Signals Before Public Statement

Trading information shows that participants estimated the likelihood of the president's removal at just 6.5% in the midday period of the prior Friday.

Yet these probabilities had increased to eleven percent by late Friday night and spiked dramatically in the first hours of January 3rd, pointing to a rapid movement in market sentiment immediately prior to the social media post was made.

"This specific wager has all the hallmarks of a trade based on non-public details," said an industry expert.

Several of other individuals also earned large payouts from bets on the same outcome.

Political Attention Emerges

Politicians are starting to take note.

A new rule put forward on the start of the week aims to prohibit government employees from making trades on prediction markets if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a bet.

Industry Context

Forecasting platforms have grown significantly in the United States, with participants able to predict everything from elections to politics.

The industry faced scrutiny under the last presidential term. However it has received a warmer welcome during the present political climate.

Insider trading is illegal in the stock market, but there are less oversight in the forecasting arena.

A company executive for another major platform said their site "has clear rules against such activities of any form."
