As Swimmers Fled Danger, Popular Photo Depicts Lifeguard Running ‘All Out’ In the Direction of the Site.

Alexandra Ching, a permanent resident of Bondi, describes the iconic coast as her personal space. On a recent Sunday evening, she, similar to other others in the area, noticed pops echoing around the community.

“We all thought the same, but I reasoned it was daylight and there was nothing visible,” Ching recounts. Stepping out of her apartment, she witnessed people “pouring up Bondi Road”. Their expressions on display made it clear trouble had occurred.

As she stood on the road, conversing with a couple who had run up the incline in their swimwear, she noticed someone approaching behind her. The person was a beach patrol officer, sprinting towards Bondi without shoes from the adjacent Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while holding a defibrillator.

“I heard someone say ‘excuse me’, and when I spun around I spotted this streak in blue,” Ching describes. “He was zooming past. He was the only one heading in the opposite way that everyone was trying to get away from, and hauling that big kit and barefoot … He moved into something that certainly every part of you would signal you to move in the other direction.

“Absolutely no pause, but just totally full throttle racing.”

A Symbol of Bravery In the Wake of Tragedy

The photo taken by Ching of the lifeguard, later named as Jackson Doolan, quickly spread as a prime example of moments of heroism in the following of the tragic event.

Andy Reid, a second beach safety officer, noted that Doolan, referred to as “Jacko”, sprinted from Tamarama beach to assist the rest of his team at Bondi, as well as to help emergency personnel, police and medical teams attending to dozens of the injured.

Collective Outpouring and Support

Doolan’s actions was part of a broader narrative to come out of the neighbourhood, with the lifeguard clubhouse adjacent to the location of the violence serving as a makeshift hospital. It was shared that other team members were also seen taking action, for instance rushing into the surf to rescue people who were struggling.

After the attack, comments of gratitude circulated widely. A social media message expressed appreciation for the individuals who exhibited that “compassion will always conquer hatred”.

The team of lifeguards published a statement, saying they were “processing what happened”.

“We are grateful all for your supportive words and encouragement. We are overwhelmed by the kindness directed at our personnel,” the team stated. “In time, we will share our stories in the hope that it aids those affected.”

Local Government Commendation

Waverley council, the administrative organization that employs many full-time lifeguards, stated that the team acted heroically from the moment the shooting started until late that nighttime.

“We have heard so many moving stories, but the popular image of Jackson Doolan, sprinting from Tamarama to Bondi with a AED so he could help preserve life is incredible,” said a local official.

“These individuals exhibit dedication every day in ensuring our internationally renowned coastlines protected for visitors, but what we saw on that evening should be celebrated.

“As we grieve and grapple with the terror of this brutal and barbaric tragedy, I think it is vital that we consider just how much positivity we have observed in the face of such evil.”
