Educator Slain and Two Dozen Pupils Seized in Firefight at School in Nigeria
Weapon-carrying attackers have fatally shot an educator and kidnapped no fewer than 25 pupils in an attack on a female high school in Nigeria's northwestern region, according to police.
The armed faction breached the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State at around 4 AM local time on Monday, officials stated.
The armed individuals "confronted officers on duty in a gun duel" before breaching the school's outer barrier and seizing the students from their living quarters, according to a statement.
One member of staff was killed while trying to protect the students. A second sustained gunshot wounds and is now receiving treatment.
Eyewitnesses described a sizeable number of assailants, identified in the area as outlaw groups, who arrived firing sporadically to cause panic.
Local residents told reporters that the armed men then led a number of girls into nearby bushland.
The law enforcement confirmed they had positioned "additional police tactical units, alongside military personnel and local protection units" to the area.
A coordinated search and rescue operation is underway in surrounding forests and believed flight corridors.
