The Disappointed Travelers

Four fans named Alex, Sam, Rory and Katie are a prime example.

The group had their travel arrangements and match passes secured for the Boxing Day and New Year Tests "well ahead of time", anticipating a long-awaited triumph.

Instead, they have watched Australia outplay the visitors in just under two weeks from their residence in the north of England.

"All my colleagues has been giving me grief that the series is done for the last two weeks," said Sam.

"The hope was that we would have something to play for upon our arrival."

Yet the fans said they had low expectations for the fourth and fifth Tests - and all they are requesting from the players is "a show of spirit".

Asked whether he believed England will triumph in a Test in this Ashes series, one fan responded: "It appears the Australians are superior currently."

"We are going to have a great time nonetheless," commented Katie Ryding. "We have to go with that outlook."

"Obviously it is disappointing we can't contest the series, but we have invested a significant amount as it is."

"We plan to savor celebrating the holidays in Australia. This will be a new experience for us abroad at this time of year."

A teacher, Katie is focused on enjoying the 21,000-mile round-trip as part of her time off.

"If all else fails, I can play golf to turn to," she added.
