Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.

The one-time leader was convicted of planning a government overthrow in last fall and given more than over two decades in prison, but he continued under home detention pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the move to detain the elderly politician was a preventative measure after fresh information emerged.

This encompassed attempting to break his ankle monitor and a call for a demonstration that could "allow for a chance to flee".

In a paperwork permitting the arrest, the magistrate said information from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his getaway".

Top judicial officials said that he knew of a scheme which included plans to assassinate Lula and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.

The conspiracy was prevented because it couldn't obtain the endorsement of the military leaders. His successor was inaugurated without problem on the first day of 2023.

But a seven days after, on January 8th, numerous Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed public facilities in the capital, Brazil's capital.
