Patients Coming Off Slimming Jabs Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters
New research indicates that patients who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional lifestyle programs.
Published data in a major health publication shows that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Users using such drugs should be cognizant of the danger of quick weight regain when the medication ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain means a reversion to starting weight within about a year and a half.
Weighing Approaches
The research, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
The team point out that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically have a more gradual weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the way of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified regain.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Issue?
The NHS suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals say that, considering the high risk of relapse, the treatment might need to be long-term.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Accounts
Individuals who have come off the jabs explain a powerful return of appetite.
"It felt as if something flipping and you're instantly ravenous," described a patient.
This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Significant Adoption
Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.
- Adoption is more common among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated behavioural management.
