The Golden State is Completely Drought-Free for the First Instance in a Quarter Century.

After a quarter-century span, no portion of the state is experiencing drought conditions. This landmark event comes on the heels of grueling years marked by insufficient rainfall that exacerbated wildfire risks and challenged its enormous farming industry.

A Map Shows An Absence of Abnormally Dry Areas

A recent update from the national drought tracker showed that California in its entirety is without dry or drought conditions. This change was driven by a period of significant storms that replenished water storage sites like Shasta and Oroville far beyond their historic averages.

“For anyone 25 or under you’ve spent your life in a world where California has been entering or recovering from drought,” stated a weather expert.

From Intense Storms to Soggy Celebrations

The journey here involved intense and deadly winter storms that pummeled the state in 2023, resulting in widespread flooding, electrical failures, and deaths. Even though those events began to alleviate the drought, they weren't enough to erase it completely.

As late as late December, areas like northeastern California were still classified as experiencing dryness. Subsequent downpours at the beginning of January finally erased those remaining dry spots.

The Vital Sierra Snow Presents a Challenge

Yet, authorities caution that drought-free conditions is not the same as being out of the woods. Latest data of the high-elevation snow show it at only about 70% of the typical level.

This snowpack, which supplies about a third of the state's usable water as it melts in the spring, is a critical factor for the year ahead. State experts point out that it is premature to draw conclusions for the annual water supply.

“The current pattern right now is more rain than snow,” commented a state water resources manager. “The goal is the snow accumulation to pick up by the start of April so that we’re closer to average.”

While the drought map is entirely green, the focus now shifts to sustaining this positive water situation during the months to come.
