Two Victims Revealed in the Providence Campus Shooting as Law Enforcement Persist in Search for Killer.

Two students who died in the weekend's violent attack at Brown University were honored at the start of the week – as a manhunt for their assailant carried on following the release by authorities in Rhode Island of the sole person detained in connection in the case.

Tributes for Ella Cook

Ella Cook, a second-year student from Alabama, was called “a wonderful, steady, devout, shining presence”, as stated by the Cathedral Church of the Advent, Birmingham, which honored her memory at a ceremony on Sunday.

She served as the vice-presidency of Brown’s chapter of the campus GOP group, according to the organization. The White House press secretary also expressed sympathies online, stating: “It's indescribable. Keeping in mind her kin and peers, particularly her mother and father.”

An International Student

The second fatality was MukhammadAziz Umurzokov from Uzbekistan, an Uzbek national in his freshman year at the prestigious university, according to relatives.

Umurzokov’s identity was officially acknowledged by Uzbekistan’s foreign ministry.

“He possessed remarkable kindness, humor, and intelligence. He harbored grand aspirations of pursuing a career in neurosurgery and assisting patients,” his sister, Samira Umurzokova said in a online post.

What Happened

Nine other people were hurt in Saturday’s attack in the school of engineering of Brown’s grounds in Providence, during the institution's end-of-term tests.

Officials stated by the end of Sunday that a 24-year-man detained in a raid at a hotel about 17 miles from the campus earlier in the day was being released.

“There is a killer at large,” declared the state's top prosecutor, Peter Neronha.

Neronha explained, “Sometimes you head in one direction, and then you must reassess and head another way, and this is precisely what occurred over the last approximately one day.”

Public Fear

Brett Smiley, Brett Smiley, acknowledged: “This will probably generate new worry for our city”.

The gunman discharged a weapon inside a classroom in the engineering building on Saturday, firing more than 40 rounds from a handgun, a police source informed the media outlet.

Law enforcement that searched the hotel found two firearms and magazines when the person of interest was taken into custody, as was reported.

The Wounded Victims

Among those wounded, one pupil was discharged from care, said Christina Paxson, Christina Paxson. An additional seven were in critical but stable condition, and another was critically ill, authorities stated on Sunday.

Durham Academy, a private K-12 school in Durham, North Carolina, said a former student, Kendall Turner, was in the group of seriously hurt victims.

Additional Memorials

Cook was remembered at a memorial in Birmingham on Sunday. A clergyman said, “Her presence was a wonderful, steady, pious glow not only during her upbringing... but at Brown she was an incredible light in that specific location as well.”

Martin Bertao, Martin Bertao, shared a message from the club. “Ella was known for her bold, brave, and kind heart as she served her chapter and fellow classmates,” he said.

The US ambassador, Jonathan Henick, said he was “deeply saddened” by Umurzokov’s death in a statement. “We extend our sincere condolences to Mr Umurzokov’s family, companions, and schoolmates and lament the passing of his potential.”

National Context

Saturday’s killings at Brown, the country's seventh most historic university with about over seven thousand undergraduate and postgraduate students, occurred during one of at least 392 shooting incidents reported in the US so far in 2025, according to records. Monday was the 349th day of the year.
